11th August- Stella Rosa McDonald
This week on another film & video art edition of Something Else, Maren caught up with Stella Rosa McDonald, a local video artist whose work Second City is showing at First Draft. This work marks the beginning of a two year video project created in participation with the Glebe Youth Service.
Stella is currently completing a Master of Fine Arts by Research at COFA. For this project she began volunteering at the Glebe Youth Service. We talk about how she got involved with the Glebe Youth Service and how she traded a hip hop video clip for some interviews. Her inteviewsare ‘scripted’, screened with white text shown on a black screen, with optional headphones hanging from the roof.
Stella explains how she got along with her subjects, and how she came to be a subject of the artwork herself as the interviewer became the interviewee, and the artist was forced to pose for a video portrait as well. She discusses the nature of video portraits and why she felt it was important to give the audience an oppourtunity to stare at another person, a habit which she enjoys practicing on public transport (don’t we all?).
Second City is showing at First Draft alongside Man Crush (Seth Birchall), Weather Underwater with ELF Balaclava Fascinators (Jacquelene Drinkall)and This Way Up! (Claire Finneran, Hossein Ghaemi) until the 28th August when there will be artist talks.
